Day 1 — Arrival and Beach Ride: Fly into Tambolaka airport (morning flights from Bali arrive around 8:30 AM). Transfer to your accommodation in Lamboya area (45 minutes). After settling in and lunch, your afternoon begins with a 2-hour introductory beach ride along Sumba’s south coast. The Sandalwood Ponies carry you along pristine sand with turquoise water stretching to the horizon. Evening dinner at your lodge with a briefing on tomorrow’s full-day adventure.
Day 2 — Full Day: Villages, Waterfalls, and Highland Riding: Depart at 7 AM for a full riding day. Morning route takes you through savannah grassland to Ratenggaro village, where towering thatched-roof houses and ancient megalithic tombs create one of Sumba’s most photographed scenes. Continue riding to a riverside lunch stop. Afternoon visit to a nearby waterfall for swimming, then ride the coastal trail back. Total saddle time: 4-5 hours covering approximately 20 kilometers.

5-Day Sumba Itinerary — The Classic Experience

Day 1 — Arrival and Orientation Ride: Arrive Tambolaka, transfer to base. Afternoon 2-hour orientation ride through nearby villages and grassland. Meet your horse, learn the handling techniques specific to Sandalwood Ponies, and get comfortable with the local terrain. Welcome dinner with your guide team.
Day 2 — South Coast Beach Expedition: Full riding day along Sumba’s spectacular south coast. Morning ride departs at 7 AM, covering beach stretches, coastal cliffs, and a river crossing. Mid-morning break at a clifftop viewpoint with panoramic ocean views. Continue to a beachside lunch location where horses rest while you swim. Afternoon ride back via an alternate route through coconut groves. Saddle time: 5 hours, 22 kilometers.
Day 3 — Traditional Villages and Highland Route: Ride inland through the highlands visiting two traditional Marapu villages. Your guide facilitates introductions with village elders who explain the significance of their megalithic tombs and clan houses. Lunch at a family home. Day 5 — Textile Village and Departure: Morning visit to an ikat weaving village where you watch the traditional dyeing and weaving process. Opportunity to purchase authentic handwoven textiles directly from the artisans. Transfer to airport for departure flight.
7-Day Sumba Itinerary — The Complete Explorer
Seven days allows a coast-to-coast Sumba experience, covering both West and East Sumba with dedicated rest days to prevent riding fatigue. This itinerary is for travelers who want to see everything.
Days 1-3: Follow the 5-day West Sumba itinerary above through Day 3.
Day 4 — Rest and Recovery Day: No riding. Visit Waikabubak market (the largest traditional market in West Sumba), explore nearby Praijing village on foot, enjoy a massage, or simply relax at your accommodation. Your muscles will thank you for the break before the East Sumba expedition begins.
Day 5 — Cross-Island Transfer and East Sumba: Scenic drive across Sumba (4 hours) with stops at viewpoints and roadside villages. Arrive in East Sumba for afternoon visit to Prailiu ikat weaving village, the most famous textile center on the island. Check into East Sumba accommodation.
Day 6 — Tanggedu Canyon and East Coast Ride: Morning drive to Tanggedu waterfall canyon — Sumba’s most dramatic natural formation. Explore the multi-layered canyon on foot. Afternoon riding session along East Sumba’s coast through fishing villages and past traditional salt-making operations. Saddle time: 3 hours.
Day 7 — Waingapu and Departure: Morning visit to Waingapu market for final textile shopping and local experiences. Transfer to Waingapu airport for departure, or return to Tambolaka if your flight departs from West Sumba.
