Family Horse Riding Adventure Sumba

Safe, Fun & Educational — The Perfect Family Holiday on Horseback

From $1,899 per family (2 adults + 2 children)

Why Sumba is Perfect for Families

Sumba Island offers something rare in today’s hyper-connected world: a genuine adventure that the whole family can share. Unlike theme parks or resort-based holidays, a Sumba horse riding experience creates lasting memories through shared discovery, cultural learning, and the joy of exploring nature together on horseback. Our family packages are specifically designed for children aged 5 and above, with gentle ponies for younger riders, patient guides, and activities that educate while entertaining.

The Sumbanese people are extraordinarily welcoming to families with children. In local culture, children are considered blessings, and your kids will find themselves showered with attention, taught traditional games, and shown how to interact with horses by children who have been riding since they could walk. It’s a cultural exchange that no classroom can provide.

5-Day Family Itinerary

Day 1 — Welcome & Pony Introduction

Airport arrival and family-friendly accommodation check-in. Afternoon pony introduction session — children learn to groom, saddle, and lead their ponies with our patient junior guides. Parents get their own horse matching. Short family beach ride (1 hour) with swimming afterward. Casual welcome dinner at the resort.

Day 2 — Beach Adventure Day

Morning family beach ride (2 hours) along Pero Beach with shell collecting, sand castle building stops. Swimming and snorkeling at a shallow protected reef suitable for children. Picnic lunch on the beach. Afternoon free time — kids can play with local children while parents relax or take an optional advanced riding session.

Day 3 — Village Discovery & Lagoon

Family ride to a traditional village (gentle terrain, 3 hours total). Children participate in traditional craft activities with local kids — learning to weave simple patterns and play traditional games. Village lunch together. Afternoon swim at Weekuri Lagoon — a safe, calm natural pool perfect for children. Sunset bonfire with marshmallow roasting.

Day 4 — Nature & Wildlife

Morning nature ride through savanna — guided wildlife spotting (birds, butterflies, wild horses in the distance). Children receive a nature journal to sketch and document their discoveries. Afternoon visit to a horse breeding farm where kids learn about Sandalwood horse care and can help feed the foals. Optional parents-only sunset gallop while kids enjoy supervised activities at the resort.

Day 5 — Farewell Ride & Departure

Final morning ride — children can now confidently handle their ponies. Family photo session on horseback. Farewell ceremony where each child receives a “Junior Horseman” certificate. Transfer to airport with adventure journals, photos, and memories that will be the best “show and tell” story at school.

Safety & Child-Friendly Features

Safety is our absolute priority for family packages. All children ride gentle, specially-trained ponies led by a dedicated handler. We provide child-sized helmets, body protectors, and appropriate stirrups. Our guides are first-aid certified and carry emergency communication equipment. The riding terrain for family packages avoids steep or challenging sections, focusing on flat beaches, gentle savannas, and well-maintained village trails. Maximum group size for family packages is 2 families to ensure personalized attention.

Why Horseback for Team Building

Corporate retreats typically involve conference rooms, trust falls, and activities that feel obligatory rather than transformative. Horseback riding fundamentally changes group dynamics because it requires genuine trust — with your horse, with your guide, and with each other. When your team navigates river crossings together, helps each other through unfamiliar terrain, and shares the thrill of beach gallops, bonds form that boardroom exercises cannot create.

Riding also levels hierarchies. Your CEO and junior analyst face the same challenge on horseback — learning to communicate with a 400-kilogram animal that does not care about corporate titles. This equalizing effect creates space for authentic connection between team members who might normally interact only through formal channels.

Retreat Structure and Logistics

Our corporate packages accommodate groups of 8-20 riders with flexible scheduling. A typical 3-day corporate retreat includes: Day 1 with team orientation, horse matching, and introductory ride followed by a beachside strategy session. Day 2 features a full riding day with team challenges and a village cultural experience. Day 3 offers a morning ride and reflection session before departure. We provide meeting spaces, presentation equipment, and catering for working sessions alongside the riding program.

Teams fly in from Bali in 75 minutes. We handle all logistics including group airport transfers, accommodation allocation, dietary requirements, and activity scheduling. Companies based in Jakarta, Singapore, or Kuala Lumpur find Sumba surprisingly accessible for a destination that feels completely removed from corporate life.

What if some team members cannot ride?

No problem. Non-riders join as support crew in our vehicle, participate in cultural activities and meals, and can try shorter introductory rides. We design inclusive itineraries where everyone contributes to the shared experience regardless of riding ability.
