Sumba Island’s Most Spectacular Waterfalls

Beyond its world-class beaches and legendary horse riding, Sumba Island hides some of Indonesia’s most impressive waterfalls within its limestone plateaus and tropical forests. From thundering multi-tiered cascades to hidden jungle pools, Sumba’s waterfalls offer refreshing natural swimming spots, stunning photography opportunities, and adventurous trekking through pristine landscapes.

Lapopu Waterfall — Sumba’s Crown Jewel

Lapopu Waterfall (also spelled Laiputi) is widely considered Sumba’s most spectacular waterfall and one of the tallest in Nusa Tenggara Timur. Located within the Manupeu Tanah Daru National Park in West Sumba, this majestic cascade drops approximately 80 meters through multiple tiers surrounded by dense tropical forest. The thundering sound of water and the cool mist that envelops the viewing area create a powerful sensory experience.

Access requires a moderate trek of approximately 30-45 minutes through the national park, passing through beautiful forest and across a river. The trail is well-established but can be slippery during wet season — sturdy footwear is essential. A natural pool at the base invites swimming, though currents can be strong during peak flow. Best visited during or shortly after the wet season (March-June) when water volume is at its most impressive.

Tanggedu Waterfall — The Grand Canyon

Often called Sumba’s Grand Canyon, Tanggedu is less a traditional waterfall and more an entire canyon system where water cascades through narrow limestone gorges into emerald pools. Located in East Sumba, the approach involves descending into the canyon on foot — a trek that rewards you with one of the most photogenic natural sites in all of Indonesia.

The layered rock formations, crystal-clear pools, and narrow canyon walls create an atmosphere of otherworldly beauty. Swimming in the natural pools is possible and highly recommended — the water is refreshingly cool. The trek to Tanggedu is moderate in difficulty but involves some scrambling over rocks. A local guide is strongly recommended, as the trail is not well-marked.

Waikelo Sawah Waterfall

Waikelo Sawah is a wide, multi-tiered waterfall in West Sumba that flows over terraced limestone formations resembling rice paddies (sawah in Indonesian). The water spreads across a broad rock face, creating hundreds of individual cascades and natural pools at each level. The effect is unique and beautiful — like a natural staircase of flowing water.

The relatively easy access (a short walk from the road) makes Waikelo Sawah one of Sumba’s most accessible waterfalls and a good choice for families or travelers with limited trekking ability. The shallow pools at various levels provide safe swimming spots, and the broad, open setting offers excellent photography conditions throughout the day.

Matayangu Waterfall

Hidden deep in the forests of West Sumba, Matayangu is a lesser-known waterfall that rewards adventurous visitors with solitude and pristine beauty. The single-drop cascade falls approximately 30 meters into a large natural pool surrounded by tropical vegetation. The trek to Matayangu is longer and more challenging than other waterfalls, making it a destination primarily for fit, adventure-seeking travelers.

Hirundung Waterfall

Located in the Manupeu Tanah Daru National Park near Lapopu, Hirundung offers a quieter alternative when Lapopu is busy. This elegant cascade drops into a secluded pool surrounded by forest, with the added benefit of excellent birdwatching opportunities in the surrounding park. The trek connects with the Lapopu trail, making it possible to visit both waterfalls in a single half-day excursion.

Weekuri Lagoon — Natural Saltwater Pool

While technically not a waterfall, Weekuri Lagoon deserves mention as one of Sumba’s most unique water features. This stunning saltwater lagoon is formed where underground springs meet the ocean through limestone caves, creating a crystal-clear natural swimming pool with a dramatic cliff setting. The turquoise water, framed by limestone walls and tropical vegetation, creates one of Sumba’s most photographed scenes.

Combining Waterfalls with Horse Riding
