The Ultimate Sumba Adventure Package: Horses, Waterfalls, and Culture
Why choose between horse riding, waterfall trekking, and cultural exploration when you can experience all three? Our Sumba Adventure Package combines the island’s most iconic experiences into a seamlessly organized itinerary that showcases the full diversity of what makes Sumba extraordinary.
What the Adventure Package Includes
The Sumba Adventure Package is our most comprehensive single-day experience, designed for travelers who want to taste everything Sumba has to offer. The day begins with a morning beach horse ride along one of West Sumba’s most spectacular coastlines. After riding, you will transfer to one of Sumba’s top waterfalls for a refreshing swim and nature trek. The afternoon features a guided cultural tour of a traditional Sumbanese village, complete with explanations of Marapu religious practices, megalithic tombs, and ikat textile weaving. The day culminates with a sunset horse ride back along the coast.
Morning: Beach Horse Riding (7:00-9:00 AM)
Your day starts in the golden morning light with a ride on a gentle Sandalwood Pony. The morning session focuses on enjoying the coastline at its most peaceful — before the heat of the day, with soft lighting perfect for photography. Depending on your experience level, rides range from gentle walking along the waterline to exhilarating canters through the shallow surf.
Morning rides typically visit beaches in the Lamboya or Wanokaka areas of West Sumba, where the coastline offers a mix of wide sandy stretches and dramatic rock formations. Your guide will share knowledge about the local marine environment, coastal ecology, and traditional fishing practices still used by coastal communities.
Midday: Waterfall Adventure (10:00 AM-12:30 PM)
After your morning ride, transfer to one of Sumba’s spectacular waterfalls. The specific waterfall depends on the season and conditions, but popular choices include Lapopu Waterfall (Sumba’s tallest, an 80-meter multi-tiered cascade), Waikelo Sawah (unique terraced limestone formations), and Tanggedu (East Sumba’s dramatic canyon system, available on extended packages).
The waterfall visit includes a guided trek through tropical forest (30-60 minutes depending on the location), swimming in natural pools at the base of the falls, and time to explore and photograph the surrounding environment. A packed gourmet lunch is served at a scenic spot near the waterfall.
Afternoon: Cultural Village Tour (1:30-3:30 PM)
The cultural segment visits one of Sumba’s most significant traditional villages. Your guide — a knowledgeable local with deep understanding of Sumbanese customs — leads you through the village, explaining the significance of megalithic stone tombs, the structure of traditional peaked-roof houses, the role of horses in Marapu ceremonies, and the intricate process of ikat textile creation.
You will have the opportunity to interact with village residents, observe daily activities, and (with permission) photograph the stunning architecture and cultural elements. A traditional betel nut offering is made to village elders as a sign of respect.
Evening: Sunset Horse Ride (4:00-6:00 PM)
The day’s grand finale: a sunset horse ride that times your return journey along the coast to coincide with Sumba’s legendary golden hour. The contrast between the morning’s fresh light and the evening’s warm glow provides completely different perspectives on the same coastline. A pause at the most scenic viewpoint allows you to watch the sun sink into the Indian Ocean from horseback.

Rainy Season Riding: What Actually Happens
The reality of riding in Sumba’s wet season is far better than most visitors expect. Rain typically arrives in short, intense afternoon bursts lasting 30-60 minutes, leaving mornings consistently clear and ideal for riding. The landscape transforms into vivid green, with wildflowers carpeting the savanna and waterfalls running at their most spectacular volume. Beach sand drains quickly after rain, providing excellent riding surfaces within an hour of a downpour. The air is cooler, the light is more dramatic for photography, and the absence of peak-season crowds means you often have entire beaches to yourself. Many of our most experienced guides consider the wet season their favourite time to ride.
Do rides get cancelled in heavy rain?
Rides are rarely cancelled outright. In the event of sustained heavy rain, we adjust the schedule — delaying departure by an hour or switching to a sheltered trail route. Safety is always our priority, and our guides make real-time decisions based on conditions. If a full day’s riding is impossible due to weather, we arrange alternative activities such as village visits, weaving workshops, or spa treatments.
