How to Book Horse Riding in Sumba: Your Complete Step-by-Step Guide
Booking horse riding in Sumba is simpler than you might expect, but a few insider tips can help you secure the best experiences, optimal timing, and maximum value. This guide walks you through every step of the booking process — from choosing your ride type to what happens on the day.
Step 1: Choose Your Experience
Sumba Horse offers a range of riding experiences, each providing a different perspective on the island. Beach Rides are our classic experience — riding along pristine coastline on a Sandalwood Pony. Available for all levels from beginner to advanced, with options for walking, trotting, and cantering. Duration 1.5-2 hours.
Sunset Rides time your beach ride to coincide with Sumba’s spectacular golden hour. Includes a pause to watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean. Photography-focused with optional professional photographer. Duration 2 hours.
Horse Swimming is our most unique offering — ride bareback into the warm ocean and swim alongside your horse. Requires basic swimming ability. Includes beach riding time. Duration 1.5-2 hours.
Full-Day Horse Tours combine multiple riding sessions with cultural visits, waterfall stops, and meals. The complete Sumba equestrian experience. Duration 6-8 hours.
Beginner Sessions include instruction, practice, and a gentle beach ride. Perfect for first-time riders. Duration 2 hours including ground instruction.
Step 2: Select Your Dates
The best time for horse riding is during the dry season (April to October), with peak conditions in June, July, and August. However, riding is available year-round with seasonal adjustments. When selecting dates, consider that morning rides (6-8 AM) offer cooler temperatures and beautiful light, midday rides (10 AM-2 PM) are warmest and generally avoided in summer months, and afternoon and sunset rides (3-6 PM) are our most popular time slots.
We recommend booking at least 48-72 hours in advance during peak season, and 24 hours during quieter months. Last-minute availability may exist but cannot be guaranteed.
Step 3: Book Your Ride
There are several ways to book. Online: Visit our booking page and fill in the inquiry form with your preferred dates, experience type, group size, and any special requirements. We respond within 24 hours with confirmation and payment details.
WhatsApp: Message us directly for the fastest response. Our team monitors WhatsApp during business hours and can confirm availability in real-time.
Through your hotel: Most Sumba hotels and resorts can arrange bookings with us on your behalf. Simply mention Sumba Horse at your hotel’s concierge desk.
As part of a package: Our trip packages bundle multiple rides with transfers and sometimes accommodation at discounted rates — ideal if you plan to ride more than once.
Step 4: Confirm and Prepare
After booking, you will receive a confirmation with your ride date, time, meeting point, what to bring, and directions. On the day, arrive at the meeting point 15 minutes early. Wear appropriate clothing — closed-toe shoes, long pants, sunscreen. Bring a camera and water. For detailed preparation advice, see our what to wear guide.
Step 5: What Happens on the Day
You will be greeted by your guide who will introduce you to your horse — a gentle, experienced Sandalwood Pony selected based on your riding level and physical size. After a safety briefing and helmet fitting, you will mount up and begin your ride. Your guide stays with you throughout, adjusting pace and route based on conditions and your comfort level.
All necessary equipment is provided: helmets, saddles, and any specialized gear for horse swimming sessions. Drinking water is available at start and finish points.
Pricing and Payment
Current pricing is listed on our pricing page. Payment can be made by bank transfer (advance), cash on the day (Indonesian Rupiah preferred), or credit card (for package bookings). A deposit of 30% is required for peak season bookings and is fully refundable up to 48 hours before your ride.
Cancellation Policy
Weather-related cancellations are fully refunded or rescheduled at no charge. Guest cancellations more than 48 hours in advance receive a full refund. Cancellations within 48 hours may be subject to a 30% fee, though we always try to accommodate rescheduling. No-shows are non-refundable.
Group and Private Bookings
Standard group rides accommodate up to 6 riders. Private rides for couples, families, or small groups can be arranged at a premium. Corporate groups, wedding parties, and events can be accommodated with advance planning — contact us for custom group quotes.
