Swimming with Horses in Sumba: An Unforgettable Ocean Experience
Of all the extraordinary experiences available on Sumba Island, swimming with horses in the ocean stands out as perhaps the most magical and unique. This rare adventure — riding a Sandalwood Pony bareback into the warm waters of the Indian Ocean — has become one of Southeast Asia’s most sought-after bucket-list experiences, attracting adventurous travelers from around the globe.
What Is Horse Swimming?
Horse swimming involves riding a horse into the ocean until the water is deep enough that the horse begins to swim. As the horse becomes buoyant, you hold onto the mane or a specially designed harness while the horse powers through the water using powerful leg strokes. The sensation is unlike anything else — you’re essentially floating alongside a 400kg animal in warm tropical waters, propelled forward by the horse’s natural swimming ability.
Sumba’s Sandalwood Ponies are naturally excellent swimmers. Unlike many horse breeds that are hesitant around water, these ponies have been swimming in the ocean for generations. Local Sumbanese children regularly ride their ponies into the sea to cool off and bathe, so the horses are completely comfortable and confident in ocean conditions.
The Horse Swimming Experience Step by Step
Your horse swimming adventure begins on the beach with a thorough safety briefing from our experienced guides. You’ll learn how to position yourself during the swimming phase, how to hold the mane correctly, and what to expect as the horse transitions from walking to swimming.
You’ll start by riding your Sandalwood Pony along the beach to warm up and establish a connection with your horse. Then, following your guide, you’ll walk the horse into the shallow water. As the depth increases, you’ll feel the horse’s gait change — first to a higher-stepping walk as it lifts its legs above the waves, then to a floating, surging motion as it begins to swim.
During the swimming phase, which typically lasts 10 to 15 minutes, you’ll ride bareback or with a minimal saddle pad. The horse swims in a wide arc, guided by the lead rider, through water that’s usually chest-to-shoulder deep on the horse. The warm Sumba ocean (typically 27-29°C) makes this a comfortable experience even without a wetsuit.
After the swimming session, you’ll ride back to shallower water and along the beach, often at a refreshing canter through the ankle-deep surf. The entire experience, including preparation and beach riding, lasts approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours.
Best Locations for Horse Swimming
Tarimbang Bay in East Sumba is our primary horse swimming location. The bay’s protected waters, gentle sandy bottom, and gradual depth increase make it ideal for this activity. The calm conditions mean horses can swim confidently without battling currents or large waves.
Secondary locations include select beaches on the south coast during calm sea conditions. Our guides assess ocean conditions daily and will only proceed with horse swimming when conditions are optimal for safety — this includes checking wave height, current patterns, and tide schedules.
Safety and Prerequisites
Horse swimming requires intermediate swimming ability — you should be comfortable in water over your head and able to swim independently. While you’ll be holding onto the horse throughout, there’s always a possibility of becoming separated in the water, so basic swimming competency is essential.
Riding experience is helpful but not strictly required. The key skills are balance and confidence around horses. Complete beginners to horse riding can participate, provided they complete a short beach riding introduction first to familiarize themselves with the horse.
Safety measures include experienced swim guides who ride alongside the group, a support boat for deep-water sessions, life jackets available for those who want them, and a maximum group size of 4 riders to ensure close supervision. Age minimum is 12 years, and all participants must sign a waiver. Riders over 85kg may be assigned to our larger, stronger horses.
What to Wear and Bring
Wear swimwear or quick-dry clothing — you will get wet. Board shorts and a rash guard are ideal. Avoid cotton clothing, which becomes heavy when waterlogged. Reef shoes or water shoes are recommended to protect feet on the rocky areas near the water’s edge.
Bring a waterproof camera or GoPro — the footage from horse swimming is absolutely spectacular. Many guests mount a GoPro on a chest harness for hands-free filming. We can also arrange for our photographer to capture the experience from the beach and from a nearby boat. Don’t forget reef-safe sunscreen and a change of dry clothes for after the experience.
When to Go Horse Swimming
Horse swimming is available year-round but is most reliable during the dry season (April-October) when ocean conditions are calmest. The best time of day is mid-morning (9:00-11:00 AM), when the water is warmest and the light is perfect for photography. Afternoon sessions are also available but depend on sea conditions.
Tide timing is crucial — our guides schedule sessions to coincide with incoming tides, which provide the calmest conditions and ideal water depth. During certain moon phases, exceptionally calm conditions create glass-like water surfaces that make for incredible photos.
Combining Horse Swimming with Other Experiences
Horse swimming pairs beautifully with other Sumba activities. Our most popular combination is a morning horse swim followed by a visit to a nearby waterfall for a freshwater rinse and picnic lunch, then an afternoon exploring traditional villages. This full-day itinerary is available as part of our Sumba trip packages.
For the ultimate equestrian day, combine horse swimming with a beach ride in the morning and a sunset ride in the evening — three completely different horse riding experiences in a single day.
