The Magic of Sunset Horse Riding in Sumba
There are few experiences in the world that match the pure magic of riding a Sandalwood Pony along a deserted Sumba beach as the sun melts into the Indian Ocean. Sunset horse riding in Sumba has become one of the island’s most iconic experiences — and for good reason. The combination of golden light, empty beaches, warm tropical air, and the rhythmic sound of hooves in the surf creates a moment of profound beauty that stays with riders forever.
What a Typical Sunset Ride Looks Like
Your sunset riding experience begins approximately two hours before sundown, typically around 4:00 PM during Sumba’s dry season. You’ll meet your guide and your horse at our staging area, where experienced handlers will help match you with the perfect Sandalwood Pony based on your riding experience and preferences.
After a brief safety orientation and warm-up ride, you’ll head toward one of our carefully selected beach locations. The outbound ride usually follows coastal trails that offer elevated views of the ocean, passing through coconut groves and grasslands where wild horses graze in the fading afternoon light.
Upon reaching the beach, the real magic begins. As the sun descends toward the horizon, the sky transforms through a palette of colors — from warm amber to deep coral to rich purple. Your guide will lead you along the waterline at a comfortable pace, with plenty of opportunities to stop for photographs. For experienced riders, there are stretches where you can canter through the shallow surf, sending up sprays of golden water in the sunset light.
The final phase of the ride coincides with the sun touching the horizon — a moment that in Sumba often produces spectacular “green flash” phenomena. You’ll stop at a scenic viewpoint to watch the final moments of sunset before beginning a gentle ride back under the first stars of evening.
Best Beaches for Sunset Riding
Not all of Sumba’s beaches face the right direction for sunset viewing. Our guides have identified the optimal locations based on the western-facing coastline. Pero Beach in West Sumba offers wide-open sands with unobstructed western horizons, making it our most popular sunset ride location. Nihiwatu Beach provides a more intimate setting with dramatic cliff backdrops that frame the sunset. Waikelo Beach combines sunset views with the visual drama of a river mouth meeting the ocean, creating reflective pools that mirror the sky’s colors.
The specific beach selected for your ride depends on the season, tide conditions, and group size. Our guides continuously rotate between locations to ensure each ride feels fresh and exclusive.
Photography Tips for Sunset Rides
Sunset rides in Sumba produce some of the most stunning equestrian photography you’ll ever capture. Our guides are trained to help position riders for the best shots. For the most dramatic silhouette photos, ask your guide to position you between the camera and the setting sun. The golden hour light in Sumba — thanks to the island’s equatorial position and clean ocean air — produces a particularly warm, soft quality that professional photographers prize.
We recommend bringing a waterproof phone case or GoPro-style camera that can be secured while riding. Many guests also book our photography package, which includes a dedicated photographer who rides alongside the group capturing professional-quality images from horseback and from strategic beach positions.
What to Wear and Bring
For sunset rides, we recommend wearing light, comfortable clothing in natural fabrics. Long pants provide better grip and protection, while a light layer is advisable as temperatures can drop pleasantly after sunset. Closed-toe shoes are required — riding boots or sturdy sneakers work well. Sandals and flip-flops are not permitted for safety reasons.
Sunglasses with a strap are essential for the low-angle sun, and sunscreen should be applied before mounting. We provide helmets, but riders who prefer their own certified riding helmet are welcome to bring one. For a complete guide on what to wear, check our what to wear for horse riding in Sumba article.
Riding Levels Welcome
Sunset rides are designed to be accessible to all experience levels. The pace is generally relaxed, focusing on enjoyment and scenery rather than speed. Beginners will find the Sandalwood Ponies’ calm temperament and the flat beach terrain ideal for their first riding experience. Intermediate and advanced riders can request faster-paced sections along appropriate stretches of beach.
Groups are typically kept small — a maximum of 6 riders — to maintain the intimate atmosphere that makes sunset rides special. Private rides for couples or families can be arranged for a truly exclusive experience.
Seasonal Considerations
The best months for sunset riding are May through September, when clear skies and minimal cloud cover produce the most vivid sunsets. During these months, sunset occurs between 5:30 and 6:00 PM, providing ideal conditions for a 2-hour ride that captures the full golden hour. The shoulder months of April and October also offer excellent conditions, though occasional cloud cover can add dramatic atmosphere to the sky.
During Sumba’s wet season (November-March), sunset rides are still available but are weather-dependent. Interestingly, some of the most spectacular sunsets occur at the edges of weather systems, when dramatic cloud formations interact with the setting sun to create extraordinary light shows.
Booking Your Sunset Ride
Sunset rides are among our most popular experiences and tend to book up quickly, especially during peak season (June-August). We recommend booking at least 48 hours in advance, though last-minute availability may exist during quieter periods. Sunset rides can be booked as standalone experiences or as part of a larger Sumba trip package.
