Getting from Bali to Sumba is easier than most travelers expect. While Sumba feels wonderfully remote, it is well-connected to Bali by regular flights that take just about an hour. This guide covers every transportation option, practical tips for smooth connections, and everything you need to know to make the journey from Bali’s tourist bustle to Sumba’s pristine tranquility.

Flying from Bali to Sumba

The fastest and most practical way to reach Sumba is by domestic flight from Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS). Sumba has two airports, and your choice depends on which part of the island you want to explore first.

To West Sumba: Tambolaka Airport (TMC)

Flight time: Approximately 55-65 minutes. Airlines: NAM Air (Sriwijaya Group), TransNusa, Wings Air. Frequency: Multiple flights daily during peak season, at least 1-2 flights daily year-round. Cost: $50-120 USD one way depending on airline, season, and booking timing.

Best for: Travelers focused on horse riding, western beaches (Nihiwatu, Pero, Mandorak), waterfalls, and Pasola cultural sites. This is our recommended airport for most Sumba Horse guests, as our primary riding locations are in West Sumba.

To East Sumba: Waingapu Airport (WGP)

Flight time: Approximately 50-60 minutes. Airlines: NAM Air, Wings Air. Frequency: 1-2 flights daily. Cost: $40-100 USD one way.

Best for: Travelers starting with East Sumba’s traditional villages, ikat weaving centers, Walakiri Beach, and Tanggedu Waterfall. Some travelers fly into one airport and out of the other to see both halves of the island.

Flight Booking Tips

Book early for the best prices — fares are lowest 4-6 weeks before departure. Domestic Indonesian flights often sell out during peak season (June-August) and holiday periods (Eid al-Fitr, Christmas, and Indonesian school holidays). Midweek flights (Tuesday-Thursday) are typically cheaper than weekend flights.

Booking platforms: Traveloka and Tiket.com are Indonesia’s leading domestic flight booking platforms and often show fares not available on international booking sites. Google Flights is also reliable for comparing options. Book directly through airline websites for the simplest rebooking process if schedules change.

Baggage: Most domestic carriers include 20kg checked baggage on standard tickets. Budget tickets may have lower allowances — check before booking, especially if traveling with riding equipment.

Ferry from Bali to Sumba

For adventurous travelers with more time, a ferry journey is possible but requires patience. There is no direct ferry from Bali to Sumba. The route requires multiple connections: Bali to Lombok (fast boat 1.5-2 hours or slow ferry 4-5 hours), Lombok to Sumbawa (ferry 1.5-2 hours), across Sumbawa by road (8-10 hours), and Sumbawa to Sumba (ferry 8-10 hours from Sape to Waingapu).

The total journey takes 2-3 days and is only recommended for travelers who enjoy overland adventure and have flexible schedules. The Sumbawa to Sumba ferry runs several times per week — check current schedules locally as they change frequently.

Connecting from International Flights

If arriving in Bali on an international flight, we recommend allowing at least 3-4 hours between your international arrival and domestic departure to Sumba. This accounts for immigration, baggage claim, customs, and the transfer between international and domestic terminals at Ngurah Rai Airport.

For same-day connections, book afternoon flights to Sumba to avoid stress. Alternatively, spend a night in Bali — the Kuta/Seminyak area is just 15 minutes from the airport and offers endless accommodation options for a transit stay.

Airport Transfers on Sumba
