Sumba Island in Dry Season: Your Guide to June-October Activities
The dry season (June to October) is widely considered the best time to visit Sumba Island. Clear skies, minimal rainfall, comfortable temperatures, and optimal conditions for outdoor activities make these months ideal for experiencing everything from horse riding to waterfall trekking. Here is everything you need to know about visiting Sumba during its golden months.
Weather and Conditions
During the dry season, Sumba enjoys daily temperatures of 27-32°C with low humidity compared to the wet months. Rainfall is minimal — typically just a few millimeters per month compared to 200mm+ during the wet season. Skies are predominantly clear, with the occasional afternoon cloud providing welcome shade without rain. The southeast trade winds bring a pleasant breeze that keeps temperatures comfortable, especially along the coast.
Ocean conditions are calm during these months, with smaller swells on the protected northern coast and consistent but manageable surf on the southern beaches. Water temperature hovers around 26-28°C — perfect for swimming and horse swimming activities.
Best Dry Season Activities
Beach Horse Riding
Dry season is peak horse riding season. The firm sand, calm seas, and comfortable temperatures create ideal conditions for beach rides. Early morning rides (6-8 AM) are especially pleasant, with cool air and beautiful soft light. The dry conditions mean trails to more remote beaches are passable, opening up riding routes that may be inaccessible during the wet season.
Horse Swimming
The calm, warm ocean conditions from June to October provide the most reliable window for horse swimming experiences. Protected bays like Tarimbang offer glass-like water surfaces that make for spectacular photography and a comfortable swimming experience.
Sunset Rides
Sunset rides during dry season benefit from clear western horizons that produce vivid orange and pink sunsets. The lack of cloud cover means you can count on a spectacular show virtually every evening. Sunset occurs between 5:30-6:00 PM during these months.
Waterfall Visits
An interesting paradox: while the dry season offers the best weather for trekking to waterfalls, the waterfalls themselves are most impressive at the beginning of the dry season (June-July) when they still carry significant flow from the preceding wet months. By September-October, smaller waterfalls may reduce to trickles, though major falls like Lapopu maintain flow year-round.
Surfing
Sumba’s famous surf breaks fire consistently during the dry season. The southeast trade winds create offshore conditions at many west-facing breaks, including the legendary Nihiwatu left. Surf is best from June through September, attracting surfers from around the world to Sumba’s uncrowded lineups.
Island Exploration
Dry roads mean the entire island is accessible by car, motorbike, or horseback. Cross-island journeys between East and West Sumba are straightforward, and remote beaches and villages that become isolated during heavy rains are reachable. This is the best time for comprehensive itineraries that cover the full island.
Month-by-Month Guide
June: The dry season begins in earnest. Waterfalls still flowing strongly. Landscape is green from recent rains. Tourist numbers are moderate. Excellent balance of good weather and lush scenery.
July-August: Peak dry season and peak tourist season. The driest, sunniest conditions. Accommodation and activities should be booked well in advance. Landscapes turn golden-brown, giving the island an African savanna appearance. Best surfing conditions.
September: Late dry season with continued excellent weather. Tourist numbers begin to decrease, creating a sweet spot of good conditions and relative tranquility. Ideal for budget-conscious travelers wanting dry season quality without peak season prices.
October: Transition month. Still predominantly dry but occasional afternoon showers signal the approaching wet season. Landscapes begin to green up. Good conditions for all activities with the lowest prices of the dry season.

Measuring Our Environmental Impact
Sustainability claims mean nothing without measurement and accountability. Sumba Horse tracks several key metrics annually: carbon footprint per guest-day, water consumption at our facilities, waste generation and diversion rates, community fund disbursements, horse welfare scores, and trail erosion assessments. These figures are reviewed by our management team and shared with guests who request them. We are committed to reducing our environmental footprint year on year while increasing the economic benefit delivered to Sumbanese communities. Transparency is central to our sustainability approach — we would rather honestly report areas for improvement than make inflated claims about our environmental credentials.
How much of my booking fee goes to local communities?
A minimum of 15 percent of every booking is allocated to our community fund, which finances clean water projects, school supplies, medical clinics, and cultural preservation initiatives in partnered villages. Additionally, all guide wages, food purchases, and accommodation payments go directly to local businesses and individuals.
