Week-Long Itinerary
Day 1 — Arrival & Coastal Welcome
Arrive Tambolaka Airport. Transfer to premium beachfront accommodation. Afternoon horse matching, safety briefing, and introductory beach ride (2 hours). Welcome bonfire dinner on the beach with traditional Sumbanese dancers and musicians performing ancient war dances.
Day 2 — West Sumba Coastal Expedition
Full-day coastal ride covering Pero Beach, Ratenggaro Village, and hidden cove beaches accessible only on horseback. Explore the spectacular cliffside traditional architecture of Ratenggaro and swim at secluded Kerewe Beach. Approximately 25km riding through diverse coastal terrain.
Day 3 — Waterfalls & National Park
Ride through Manupeu Tanah Daru National Park to Lapopu Waterfall. Birdwatching for endemic Sumba species. Swimming in natural waterfall pools. Visit Southwest Sumba ikat weaving villages. Evening swim at Weekuri Lagoon. Approximately 20km riding through forest and savanna.
Day 4 — Central Sumba Megalithic Heartland
Cross into Central Sumba through rolling savannas. Visit Anakalang and Pasunga megalithic villages. Experience traditional Marapu ceremonies if available. Overnight at our exclusive safari camp deep in the savanna, with gourmet dinner prepared by our chef and stargazing far from any light pollution.
Day 5 — Wild Horse Plains & Eastern Approach
Epic riding day through the Lewa and Kambera grasslands alongside herds of wild Sandalwood horses. This is the most cinematically stunning day of the entire journey. Continue east to Waingapu, arriving at comfortable hotel accommodation. Approximately 30km through open savanna country.
Day 6 — East Sumba Culture & Coast
Morning visit to Praijing and Rende traditional villages — the finest examples of Sumbanese architecture and ikat weaving. Afternoon ride to Walakiri Beach for the iconic mangrove sunset session. Evening farewell dinner featuring East Sumbanese specialties and a celebration of your cross-island journey.
Day 7 — Sunrise Ride & Departure
Optional sunrise ride at Walakiri or relaxed morning. Transfer to Waingapu Airport (WGP) or Tambolaka Airport (TMC) depending on your onward flights. Depart with approximately 120km of horseback memories, hundreds of professional photographs, and a deep connection to one of the world’s most extraordinary islands.

Day 1: Welcome to Sumba
Arrive at Tambolaka Airport and transfer to your beachfront accommodation. After freshening up, meet your Sandalwood Pony at our stables for an introductory session. Your guide assesses your riding level and matches you with the ideal horse for the week. An easy sunset ride along the beach sets the tone for the days ahead, followed by a welcome dinner with traditional Sumbanese cuisine.
Days 2–3: Coastal Riding and Marine Encounters
Two full days exploring Sumba’s legendary coastline on horseback. You ride across pristine beaches with no footprints but your own, trot through shallow tidal pools, and gallop along firm sand stretches where the Indian Ocean waves crash just metres away. Between rides, there are opportunities for swimming with horses in calm bays — one of the most photographed experiences in Indonesian tourism. Evenings are spent at beachside dining under the stars.
Days 4–5: Highland Culture and Village Life
The journey moves inland to the highlands, where Marapu villages sit on hilltops surrounded by rice paddies and savanna. You ride between villages, visiting master ikat weavers, exploring megalithic stone tombs, and learning about the Pasola horse festival from the riders who participate in it. The highland accommodation offers panoramic views of the valleys below, and the cooler temperatures provide a refreshing contrast to the coastal heat.
Day 6: Waterfall Adventure
A highlight of the 7-day itinerary is the waterfall ride. Your route follows forest trails to one of Sumba’s hidden cascades, where you dismount for swimming in crystal-clear pools beneath the falls. The return ride takes a different path through bamboo forest and river crossings, offering some of the most varied terrain of the entire trip.
Day 7: Farewell Gallop and Departure
The final day features a sunrise beach gallop — the moment guests describe as the single most memorable experience of their trip. After the ride, a farewell brunch is served at the stables, where you say goodbye to your horse and receive a personalised photo album of your journey. Airport transfers are arranged for your convenience.
