FAQ about horse riding in Sumba

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about riding with Sumba Horse — from booking and preparation to what happens on ride day.

Booking and Planning

How far in advance should I book?

For peak season visits between June and September, we recommend booking 6 to 8 weeks in advance to secure your preferred dates and package. During shoulder season from October to November and April to May, 2 to 4 weeks is usually sufficient. Last-minute bookings may be possible depending on availability, but early booking ensures the best horse selection and accommodation options.

What is included in the package price?

All packages include expert English-speaking guides, premium Sandalwood horses matched to your skill level, certified safety equipment including helmets, comprehensive insurance, professional photography, and refreshments. Multi-day packages additionally include accommodation at our partner properties, three meals daily, all ground transportation and airport transfers, and a curated digital photo album. Specific inclusions vary by package tier and are detailed on our pricing page.

What is your cancellation and refund policy?

Cancellations made 30 or more days before the trip receive a full refund. Cancellations 15 to 29 days before receive a 50 percent refund. Within 14 days, the deposit is non-refundable but can be applied as credit toward a future booking within 12 months. In the rare event we cancel due to extreme weather or safety concerns, you receive a full refund or complimentary rescheduling.

Riding Experience

Do I need prior riding experience?

Not for most of our experiences. Beach rides and beginner lessons are designed for complete first-timers with no prior horse experience. Our patient Sandalwood horses and experienced guides ensure a safe and comfortable introduction to riding. Mountain trail rides and horse swimming require moderate riding confidence, which can be developed through our beginner lesson program. We offer a quick 30-minute pre-ride assessment for all guests to determine the best experience match.

What is the weight limit for riders?

Our Sandalwood horses are compact and agile, suited for riders up to 90 kilograms for standard rides and 85 kilograms for horse swimming experiences. For riders above these limits, we may be able to accommodate you with our larger horses depending on the specific experience. Please contact us directly to discuss options — we want every guest to have a safe and enjoyable experience.

What should I wear for riding?

Wear comfortable long pants that allow free leg movement — lightweight hiking pants or leggings work well. Closed-toe shoes with a small heel are ideal, but sturdy sneakers are acceptable for beach rides. For horse swimming, wear swimwear or quick-dry clothing underneath. We provide helmets for all rides. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses with a strap, and a light layer for cooler morning rides. Avoid loose scarves or dangling jewelry that could catch on equipment.

Is it safe for children?

Yes. We welcome children aged 6 and above on our family-friendly beach rides. Children are paired with our gentlest, most experienced horses and accompanied by a dedicated children’s guide. For younger children aged 4 to 5, we offer supervised pony walks on lead rein along the beach. All children must wear helmets and be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also riding. Our family packages are specifically designed to accommodate mixed age groups and skill levels.

Travel and Logistics

How do I get to Sumba?

Most international visitors fly to Bali first, then take a 90-minute domestic flight to Tambolaka Airport on Sumba’s western coast. Garuda Indonesia and Wings Air operate daily flights. We provide detailed flight recommendations and all multi-day packages include airport transfers. Visit our How to Get to Sumba page for complete travel information including visa requirements.

Do you provide accommodation?

Yes, all multi-day packages include accommodation at our vetted partner properties. You choose your preferred tier: luxury resort such as Nihi Sumba or Lelewatu, boutique hotel, or comfortable guesthouse. We handle all booking and logistics so you can focus on enjoying your riding adventure. Single-day experience guests arrange their own accommodation, but we are happy to recommend options for any budget.

What happens if it rains?

Light rain does not stop our rides — in fact, riding in gentle tropical rain can be a refreshing and unique experience. For heavy rainfall, we adjust scheduling to morning sessions when weather is typically clear, or offer alternative activities such as stable visits, traditional weaving workshops, or cultural experiences in covered venues. During the wet season from December to March, our itineraries are designed with weather flexibility built in. Full-day cancellations due to extreme weather are rescheduled or refunded.

Health and Safety

Do I need travel insurance?

While our packages include activity-specific insurance covering riding incidents, we strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical evacuation, trip cancellation, and general travel disruptions. Sumba has a local hospital but specialized medical facilities require evacuation to Bali or Jakarta. Ensure your policy covers equestrian activities specifically, as some standard travel policies exclude horse riding.

Are there any health requirements?

No vaccinations are legally required for entry to Indonesia, though we recommend being up to date on routine vaccinations and considering hepatitis A, typhoid, and antimalarial medication based on your health provider’s advice. Riders should be in reasonable physical health with no serious back or neck injuries. Please disclose any medical conditions during booking so we can accommodate your needs and ensure the safest possible experience.
