How to Get to Sumba Island
Your complete travel guide to reaching Sumba Island — flights, connections, visa requirements, and everything you need for a smooth journey to paradise.
Getting to Sumba from Anywhere in the World
Sumba Island is located in the East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia, approximately 400 kilometers east of Bali. Despite its remote reputation, reaching Sumba has become increasingly convenient with multiple daily flights from Bali and other Indonesian hub cities. The journey from Bali takes just 90 minutes by air, making it one of the most accessible remote island destinations in Southeast Asia.
Sumba has two airports: Tambolaka Airport in the west, which is the primary gateway for Sumba Horse guests, and Waingapu Airport in the east, which serves the island’s largest town. For horse riding experiences along the southwestern coast, Tambolaka is by far the most convenient arrival point, located just 30 minutes from our main stable and operations base.
Flights to Sumba
From Bali (Ngurah Rai International Airport): This is the most common route for international travelers. Garuda Indonesia and Wings Air operate daily direct flights to Tambolaka with a flight time of approximately 80 to 90 minutes. Flight prices range from USD 80 to 200 round trip depending on the season and how far in advance you book. We recommend booking flights at least 3 to 4 weeks ahead during peak season from June to September when demand is highest.
From Jakarta: NAM Air and Garuda Indonesia offer flights with one connection, typically through Bali or Kupang, with total travel time of 4 to 6 hours depending on the layover. Direct Jakarta-Tambolaka flights occasionally operate during peak season.
From Kupang (West Timor): Wings Air operates daily flights from Kupang to both Tambolaka and Waingapu, with a flight time of approximately 45 minutes. This route is useful for travelers combining Sumba with Komodo or Flores island visits.
International Connections
International travelers typically fly into Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, which receives direct flights from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, Melbourne, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and many other major cities. From Bali, you can either connect immediately to Sumba or spend a night in Bali before your morning flight. Many of our guests enjoy a day or two in Bali before or after their Sumba riding adventure, creating a complete Indonesian holiday itinerary.
For guests arriving late in Bali, we recommend staying near the airport (Jimbaran or Kuta area) for an early morning departure to Sumba. Our team can recommend specific hotels and arrange ground transportation in Bali if needed.
Visa Requirements
Citizens of over 80 countries are eligible for Indonesia’s Visa on Arrival, which costs approximately USD 35 and is valid for 30 days with the option to extend for an additional 30 days. The VOA can be obtained at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport upon arrival. Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Some nationalities qualify for visa-free entry for stays of up to 30 days. We recommend checking the latest visa requirements with your nearest Indonesian embassy or consulate before traveling, as policies may change.
Airport Transfers and Ground Transport
All Sumba Horse multi-day packages include complimentary airport pickup and drop-off at Tambolaka Airport. Our driver will be waiting at arrivals with a Sumba Horse sign and a cold welcome drink. The transfer to our operations base takes approximately 30 minutes along a scenic coastal road. For single-day experience bookings, airport transfers can be arranged for a nominal fee of USD 25 each way. Public transportation on Sumba is limited, so we strongly recommend arranging all transfers through our team or your accommodation.
Can Sumba Horse arrange my flights?
We do not directly book flights but we provide detailed flight recommendations and can connect you with our travel agent partner who specializes in East Nusa Tenggara routing. We monitor flight schedules and alert you if schedules change before your trip.
Is there an ATM on Sumba?
ATMs are available in Waitabula and Waikabubak towns but can occasionally run out of cash, especially during holidays. We recommend bringing sufficient Indonesian Rupiah in cash from Bali as a backup. Major hotels and our operations accept credit card payments but smaller local businesses are cash-only.

Airport Transfers and Ground Transport
Tambolaka Airport (TMC) in West Sumba is the primary arrival point for horse riding guests. The airport is small and efficient — you will typically clear arrivals within 15 minutes. Our team meets every guest at the airport with a branded vehicle and cold refreshments. The transfer to our stables and partner accommodations takes between 30 and 90 minutes depending on your chosen lodge. For guests arriving at Waingapu Airport (WGP) in East Sumba, we arrange transfers that include scenic stops along the cross-island highway. Private car hire and motorbike rental are also available for independent travellers who prefer to explore at their own pace between rides.
Visa and Entry Requirements
Most international visitors can obtain a Visa on Arrival (VOA) at Indonesian airports for approximately USD 35, valid for 30 days and extendable once. Citizens of ASEAN countries may enter visa-free. We recommend confirming current requirements with your nearest Indonesian embassy before travel, as regulations can change. Travel insurance covering equestrian activities is strongly recommended and should be arranged before departure.
Are there direct international flights to Sumba?
Currently there are no direct international flights. All international visitors connect through Bali (DPS), Jakarta (CGK), or Kupang (KOE). Bali to Tambolaka is the most popular route with multiple daily flights taking approximately one hour.
