Whether you prefer waking up in a clifftop villa overlooking the Indian Ocean or staying in a traditional Sumbanese-inspired bungalow surrounded by coconut palms, this island delivers accommodations that match the magic of the riding experiences.
As your equestrian travel partner, Sumba Horse works closely with the island’s finest properties to offer seamless stay-and-ride packages. All our multi-day trip packages include accommodation arranged through our trusted partner network, ensuring consistent quality, preferential rates, and convenient proximity to riding locations.
Luxury Resorts
Nihiwatu (Nihi Sumba) — Consistently ranked among the world’s best hotels by Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler, Nihi Sumba occupies a stunning 2.5-kilometer stretch of private beach on Sumba’s western coast. The resort features 33 unique villas, a world-class spa, the famous Nihiwatu surf break, and extraordinary farm-to-table dining. Sumba Horse offers exclusive riding excursions departing from Nihi’s grounds, allowing guests to explore the surrounding coastline and traditional villages on horseback.
Lelewatu Resort Sumba — Perched on dramatic sea cliffs, Lelewatu offers breathtaking panoramic ocean views from every villa. The resort’s architecture draws heavily from traditional Sumbanese design, with soaring thatched roofs and locally sourced materials. Their infinity pool appears to merge with the horizon, creating one of the most photographed hotel views in Indonesia. We arrange morning rides from the resort that descend through hidden trails to secluded beaches below the cliffs.
Maringi Sumba — A newer addition to Sumba’s luxury landscape, Maringi combines contemporary design with deep respect for local culture. The villas feature private plunge pools, outdoor rain showers, and stunning sunset views. Located in the Kodi region, Maringi provides easy access to some of Sumba’s most dramatic megalithic tombs and traditional villages, making it ideal for riders interested in cultural immersion alongside their equestrian activities.
Boutique and Mid-Range Options
Sumba Hospitality Foundation — This unique social enterprise hotel provides exceptional service delivered by students in Indonesia’s first hospitality school for underprivileged youth. Staying here directly supports local education while enjoying comfortable rooms, beautiful gardens, and authentic Sumbanese hospitality. The foundation is located near Tambolaka, making it a convenient base for our riding excursions.
Mananga Sumba — A charming boutique property featuring individually designed bungalows set in tropical gardens overlooking rice paddies. Mananga offers an authentic Sumbanese experience with modern comforts, including an excellent restaurant serving local cuisine with international flair. Their location in the central highlands provides easy access to mountain trail rides and village visits.
Budget-conscious travelers will find clean and comfortable guesthouses in Waitabula and Waikabubak towns, ranging from USD 25 to 60 per night. While these properties lack resort amenities, they offer authentic local atmosphere and warm Indonesian hospitality. Our team can recommend specific properties based on your preferences and help arrange transfers to and from riding locations.
Where to Base Yourself
For beach riding and horse swimming experiences, we recommend staying on the southwestern coast near Pero Beach or Kerewei Beach. For mountain and cultural rides, properties near Waikabubak in the central highlands are ideal. For a combined experience covering both coastline and interior, our multi-day packages include accommodation transitions between different regions so you experience the full diversity of Sumba’s landscapes without the hassle of planning logistics yourself.
Does Sumba Horse include accommodation in packages?
Yes. All multi-day packages of 3 days or more include accommodation at our partner properties. You can choose your preferred tier — luxury resort, boutique hotel, or comfortable guesthouse — and we adjust the package pricing accordingly.
How far are accommodations from riding locations?
Our partner properties are all within 15 to 45 minutes of our main riding locations. Most multi-day packages include daily transfers between your accommodation and the day’s riding starting point. Some properties allow us to bring horses directly to their grounds for the most convenient experience possible.
Need Help Choosing?
Our team knows every property on the island. Tell us your budget and preferences, and we will recommend the perfect stay for your riding adventure.
Accommodation Tiers and Booking
We work with three accommodation tiers to suit different budgets and preferences. Our Premium tier features internationally managed luxury eco-resorts with private pools, spa facilities, and gourmet dining. The Boutique tier includes locally owned designer lodges that combine Sumbanese architecture with modern comfort. The Authentic tier offers traditional-style guesthouses in village settings for travellers who prioritise cultural immersion over amenities. All tiers are vetted for cleanliness, safety, and proximity to our riding trails, and all packages include breakfast as standard.
Our Recommendation
For first-time visitors, we recommend the Boutique tier — it offers the best combination of comfort, local character, and value. These lodges are typically owner-operated, meaning you receive personal attention and insider tips that larger resorts cannot match. For honeymoons and special celebrations, the Premium tier delivers an unforgettable luxury experience. For adventurous travellers and repeat visitors, the Authentic tier provides the deepest connection to Sumbanese culture and community.
Is accommodation included in the riding packages?
Yes, all multi-day packages include accommodation at Boutique-tier lodges as standard. Upgrades to Premium tier are available for a supplement. We handle all accommodation bookings on your behalf to ensure seamless logistics.
