Nihiwatu Beach
Firm sand · Cantering
Ranked among the world's best beaches. Limestone cliffs behind you, powerful surf beside you, and sand fine and firm enough to canter.

Gallop along pristine white sand with turquoise water to the horizon — the most breathtaking coastal ride in Indonesia.
Book Beach RideSumba has some of the most spectacular beaches in Southeast Asia, and seeing them from horseback turns a coastal visit into an adventure. Our beach rides follow stretches of white sand that mass tourism has never reached.
Unlike Bali or Lombok, where beach rides compete with sunbathers and vendors, Sumba's coast offers kilometres of empty shoreline where the only sounds are the surf and hooves on wet sand.
Departures are timed deliberately. Early morning rides catch low golden light coming off the Indian Ocean; late afternoon rides run into the sunset.
Three distinct coastlines, each matched to a different pace and rider level.

Every ride starts at our stables with a safety briefing and an introduction to your Sandalwood Pony — the native breed, sure-footed on sand and calm around water.
The approach takes you through tropical forest, villages and coconut plantations before the ocean appears through a gap in the trees. Most rides run two to three hours; extended packages add a beachside picnic lunch.
Beach riding here is governed by the tide. Low tide exposes wide stretches of firm, compact sand — the ideal surface for a long gallop. High tide pushes the riding zone up towards the dunes, where softer sand suits walking and trotting instead.
Our guides time every ride around the tide table so you get the surface that matches the ride you booked. The dry season from April to October gives the most consistent conditions; the wet season from November to March turns the inland approach trails a deep green.
Safety comes first on the coast. We monitor tides daily, avoid strong currents and hidden rocks, and use only horses selected and trained for coastal work — comfortable with waves and steady on wet sand.
The standard beach ride is two to three hours. Extended rides with a picnic lunch run four to five hours, and multi-day coastal expeditions cover several beaches.
Yes — beach riding on firm sand is one of the most comfortable experiences a beginner can have. Gentle ponies and experienced guides make it safe at any level.
Many of them love it. We run specific routes where you can ride through the surf, and your guide will match you with a water-confident horse. It is entirely optional.
Yes. Sand drains quickly after rain, so conditions stay excellent year round. We may shift start times to avoid heavy afternoon showers — with the bonus of cooler temperatures and dramatic skies.
