Waingapu: Walakiri + Puru Kambera
Full day · East Sumba
A ride across the open grasslands of Puru Kambera where free-roaming horses are common, then a local lunch and a sunset beach ride at Walakiri.

Three curated day tours from Waingapu and Tambolaka, with hotel or airport transfers included — built for travellers passing through.
Book a Day TourEvery option includes return air-conditioned transfers with a driver who stays with you all day.
Yes — you can ride Sumba in one day, even landing in the morning and flying out the next afternoon.
Most of our guests book multi-day expeditions, but a full itinerary is not always realistic. If you are transiting, joining a cruise, or fitting Sumba into a longer Indonesia route, these three tours deliver the essentials without the compromise you would expect.
Choose by the airport you land at. Waingapu opens East Sumba's savanna and sunset beaches; Tambolaka opens the west coast and the traditional villages.
Pickup is built around where you are staying or landing. Waingapu-area hotels are collected around 08:00–08:30 for full-day tours, or 07:00 and 13:00 for the half-day savanna departures.
First time on a horse? Sumba is arguably the best place in Indonesia to start. The Sandalwood pony's calm temperament and compact size mean complete novices finish the day comfortable.
Sumba's day tours exist because so many travellers pass through the island rather than staying. If you are overnighting between flights we design the schedule around your departure time and get you back with a buffer that is actually sensible.
Day tour decisions are usually last-minute decisions, and our booking process is built for that. The savanna half-day is the most flexible and can often run with a few hours' notice; full-day tours are best requested a day ahead so we can position horses and confirm the lunch stop.
Light rain rarely stops a ride — the savanna is at its greenest in the wet months. If conditions are genuinely unsafe we reschedule or adjust the route at no penalty.
Often, yes. The savanna half-day is the most flexible and can frequently run with a few hours' notice. Full-day tours are best requested at least a day ahead, but message us anyway — if horses and guides are free we will make it work.
No. Every day tour is beginner-friendly by design. The Sandalwood pony's calm temperament, its compact size, and a guide at your side throughout mean complete novices finish the day comfortable.
Choose by your arrival airport. Landing at Waingapu, take Walakiri and Puru Kambera for the savanna-plus-sunset-beach combination. Landing at Tambolaka, the west coast and village tour saves a long cross-island drive.
Yes. Sandalwood ponies suit young riders well, and children's sessions are led at walking pace with a handler on foot. Tell us ages when you enquire so we can match ponies and adjust the route.
Send your date, pickup point and preferred option — we usually confirm availability, price and pickup time within the hour.
