What the Stable Experience Is
A guided half-day programme, roughly three hours, held entirely at our stables and paddocks. Instead of a trail ride you join the daily rhythm of horse care: brushing coats, preparing feed, offering it by hand.
We built it around the guests standard riding itineraries leave out — families with toddlers, travellers nervous around horses, guests with limited mobility, and photographers who want time with the animals rather than time in the saddle.
It is also our most affordable programme, and deliberately so. It is the entry point into the world of the Sandalwood pony.

Grooming and Feeding
Opens the visit
A handler introduces you to your pony by name and shows you how to approach, where to stand, and how to read its body language — then the curry comb and body brush.

Informal mini-class
No lecture hall — stools in the shade beside the paddock, and the story of why this small horse carries such a large history.

Photo Session with the Herd
The final hour
Unhurried time among the ponies. Handlers know each animal's patience and position you safely — brushing a mane, or just sitting on the fence with the herd behind you.
Who It Is Designed For
Families with babies and toddlers: children too young to ride can still stroke a pony's neck, hold a feed bucket with a parent, and watch grooming up close.
Guests who are nervous around horses, guests with limited mobility, and photographers who want the animals rather than the ride. Nobody is ever pushed toward a saddle.

Our Horse Welfare Standards
An experience built on closeness only works when the horses are genuinely well, so the standards here are non-negotiable and they are what caps availability.
Each pony takes part in a limited number of interaction sessions per day, with rest days built into the rota. We would rather turn a booking away than overwork an animal — which is why we ask you to reserve your date before you arrive rather than turning up.
The Sandalwood is native to Sumba and neighbouring Sumbawa, one of only eight officially recognised horse breeds in Indonesia. The name comes from the sandalwood tree, historically the island's most famous export, alongside which the horses were traded.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a minimum age?
No. Because there is no riding, even babies and toddlers can join in a parent's arms. Children handle feed and brushes under direct supervision, matched with our calmest ponies.
Is it suitable for guests with limited mobility?
Yes, within reason. The grooming bay and feeding area are on level ground with shaded seating, and nothing involves climbing or mounting. Tell us your needs when booking so we prepare the most accessible setup.
Will I be pushed to ride?
Never. The stable experience is a complete programme in itself, and many guests come precisely because they do not want to ride. If you become curious we will point you toward a lesson — but the invitation only ever comes from you.
What happens if it rains?
Grooming, feeding and the mini-class move under the covered stable area, so the session runs in almost all weather. In severe weather we reschedule free to another day of your trip.
