Your Sunset Ride Journey

Each sunset ride is timed to perfection. We depart from our stables approximately two hours before sunset, allowing time for a leisurely ride through the island’s interior landscape. The route follows shaded forest trails and passes through at least one traditional village where children wave and elders nod in greeting. As the trail opens onto the coast, your guide adjusts the pace to ensure you arrive at our signature viewpoint with plenty of time to enjoy the spectacle.

The beach portion of the ride is the highlight. Your horse walks through the warm shallows as the sun touches the horizon, creating reflections that turn the wet sand into liquid gold beneath the hooves. Our Standard Sunset Ride is a 2-hour experience departing 90 minutes before sunset. It includes the ride to and along the beach, a stop at our viewpoint for photographs, and a return ride under the stars. Our Premium Sunset package adds a beachside picnic dinner with local cuisine, champagne, and candlelight — perfect for proposals, anniversaries, or simply treating yourself to something extraordinary. The Ultimate Sunset experience is a private ride for two with a professional photographer who captures every moment.

During full moon periods, we offer our exclusive Moonrise Ride, which extends the sunset ride into the evening as the full moon rises over the ocean behind you while the sun sets ahead. This rare combination of celestial events creates a truly magical atmosphere that our guests describe as almost otherworldly. These rides are limited to just 4 guests per evening and book out months in advance.

The Golden Hour on Horseback

Sumba’s sunset rides begin at approximately 4:00 PM, timed to place you on the beach or at a clifftop viewpoint as the light turns golden. The 2-hour experience covers 8-10 kilometers along the south coast, starting on inland trails through savannah before emerging onto the beach for the final hour as the sun descends toward the Indian Ocean horizon.

The light quality during Sumba’s golden hour is extraordinary — warm amber tones reflecting off wet sand as waves recede, silhouettes of horses and riders against painted skies, and the gradual deepening of color from gold through orange to deep crimson.
