The Most Romantic Ride in Indonesia
There are sunsets, and then there are Sumba sunsets seen from horseback. This is the crown of our riding programme — the island's golden-hour light paired with a coastal route built to stretch every minute of it.
You depart in the late afternoon, ride through coconut groves and traditional villages, and come out onto empty beach just as the sky turns from blue to gold to crimson.
Sumba sits at a latitude where the sun's descent is neither rushed nor slow, which gives an extended golden hour that can run 45 minutes or more.
Your Sunset Ride Journey
Every sunset ride is timed to the minute. We leave the stables roughly two hours before sunset, which allows an unhurried ride through the island's interior — shaded forest trails and at least one traditional village where children wave and elders nod.
As the trail opens onto the coast your guide adjusts the pace so you reach the viewpoint with time to spare. The beach section is the highlight: your horse walks through warm shallows as the sun touches the horizon and the wet sand turns to liquid gold.

Sunset rides are our most requested offering for couples. Proposals on horseback have become something of a specialty — guides coordinate timing and positioning discreetly while keeping the moment spontaneous.
Anniversaries, honeymoon highlights and birthdays all suit the format. We can arrange professional photography, beachside champagne, or a private dinner after the ride.
The light itself is the reason to come: warm amber reflecting off wet sand as waves recede, horses and riders in silhouette, and colour deepening from gold through orange to crimson.

April through October gives the clearest skies and the most dramatic sunsets. We run sunset rides year round, adjusting the route to the weather.

Between 3:30 PM and 4:30 PM depending on the season. We check sunset times daily and set departure so you reach the beach for the best light.
Can we take photos during the ride?
Please do. Guides are happy to photograph you on horseback, and the Ultimate package includes a professional photographer.
