Ride West SumbaWest Sumba is where you land and, for most riders, where you stay. Tambolaka Airport sits in the neighbouring regency but serves this whole western half, and our main stable is thirty minutes from arrivals.
It is also the cultural heartland. Horses here are not livestock — they are wealth, standing and spiritual connection, and they appear at funerals, marriage negotiations and the Pasola. Riding into a village on horseback is the traditional arrival of an honoured guest, which is why doors open that stay shut to a minibus.
Each of these is reachable on horseback, and three of them are considerably better that way.

This regency has the most varied terrain on Sumba: cliff paths above Ratenggaro, endless flat sand at Pero, and savanna in between.

Tambolaka Airport takes daily flights from Bali, Kupang and Ende, with the Bali leg running about ninety minutes. Our team meets every guest at arrivals and transfers you to your accommodation or straight to the stable.
Accommodation runs the full range, from Nihi Sumba on the western coast to locally owned guesthouses in Waikabubak. For riders we suggest basing near the Pero Beach stables or along the southwest coast, where a morning ride can begin at the door.
Three days covers the highlights of this regency. Five to seven allows a multi-day expedition, which is where West Sumba stops being a set of destinations and becomes a single continuous ride.
No. The Sandalwood ponies are gentle and well trained, and flat beach ground is genuinely beginner-friendly. More technical cliff and savanna terrain is available for experienced riders.

Yes. Sumba is among the safest destinations in Indonesia, and the Sumbanese are known for their hospitality toward visitors. Ordinary travel precautions apply.
Yes. Pasola runs across several West Sumba sites in February and March, with exact dates set by the nyale sea worm ceremony and confirmed four to six weeks ahead. Book Pasola packages around three months out.
