Why Sumba Is the Right Place to Learn
Learning here has advantages a standard riding school cannot offer. Sandalwood Ponies are smaller than European breeds, which makes them far less intimidating when you are standing next to one for the first time.
Their gaits are smooth and their temperament is calm — the qualities that made the breed central to Sumbanese life for centuries also make it forgiving of a beginner's mistakes.
And the setting helps. Learning to ride is easier when the arena opens onto beach and savanna rather than a car park.
Our Beginner Programme
Three stages. Most guests do the first two in a single trip.
-
01
Introduction Session
1 hour · from USD 85
In our training arena: how to approach and greet a horse, mounting and dismounting safely, posture, basic rein handling and the first simple commands.
-
02
Guided First Ride
Arena to open ground
Once the basics are steady you leave the arena with an instructor beside you — usually the moment beginners say it finally clicked.
-
03
Onward to a Real Ride
Beach or trail
Most guests move to a beach ride within the same trip. Firm sand at walking pace is the gentlest possible next step.

Safety Is the Foundation
Every session opens with a safety briefing: helmet fitting, emergency dismount, and how to communicate with your horse when something unexpected happens.
We use only our gentlest, most experienced horses for beginners, and no instructor is ever supervising more people than they can actually watch.
- Riders from age 5 and up
- Under 8s led by a handler throughout
- Ponies carry riders comfortably up to 90 kg
- Larger crossbreeds available on request
- Long trousers and closed-toe shoes required
- Helmets provided, riding boots on loan
What to Expect in Your First Hour
Almost nobody rides in their first fifteen minutes, and that is deliberate. You will spend time on the ground first — learning where to stand, how a horse reads your body, and why approaching from the wrong side unsettles an animal that has done nothing wrong.
Once you mount, the instructor stays within arm's reach. Rein contact comes after balance, and balance comes after simply sitting still while the horse walks.
Avoid loose scarves and jewellery — anything that can catch is worth leaving at the hotel.
Frequently Asked Questions
What age can children start riding?
We accept riders from age five. Children under eight are led by a handler throughout the lesson, and our smallest ponies are trained specifically for young riders.
Is there a weight limit?
Sandalwood Ponies comfortably carry riders up to 90 kg. For heavier riders we have larger crossbreed horses available — tell us in advance so we can select the right horse.
What should I wear?
Long trousers and closed-toe shoes are required. We provide helmets and can lend riding boots. Avoid loose scarves or jewellery that could get tangled.
Will I actually ride on my first day?
Yes. The introduction session includes time in the saddle in the arena, and most guests move to open ground the same day or the next.
