Ride Sandalwood Ponies through pristine beaches, lush rainforest and ancient villages. From sunrise gallops to sunset swimming, every ride tells a story.
Book Your RideSumba is one of the last places on Earth where horses remain central to daily life. Unlike the commercial operations in Bali, riding here is an authentic connection with the island's equestrian heritage.
The Sandalwood Pony has been native to Sumba for over 400 years — compact, hardy, and perfectly adapted to the island's terrain. From the white sand of Nihiwatu to the rolling savannah of East Sumba, these horses carry riders through landscapes that rival the world's best riding destinations.
We run the island's most comprehensive guided riding programme. Sumbanese handlers and international guides keep every ride safe and culturally rich, whether it is your first time in a saddle or your thousandth.
Four core ride types, each available from beginner pace to experienced canter.

Every ride includes a full safety briefing, professionally maintained tack, and guides working to a maximum four riders per guide. Each pony is assessed for temperament and matched to your experience level.
Wear comfortable long trousers and closed-toe shoes; riding boots help but are not required. Bring sunscreen, a hat and a camera. Helmets are provided.
If it is your first time on a horse, start with a beach ride — firm sand is the most forgiving surface there is, and the pace is entirely yours to set.
Confident riders looking for terrain and distance should choose a mountain trail. Riders travelling as a couple almost always choose the sunset ride. Horse swimming asks for a little more balance, so we place it at intermediate level and up.
Yes. Our Sandalwood Ponies are gentle and well trained, which makes them ideal for first-time riders. The beginner programme starts with ground handling and basic instruction before you head out.
Rides start from USD 200 per person for a 1.5-hour beach ride. Multi-day packages carry significant savings — see the pricing page for current rates.
Sandalwood Ponies are compact but remarkably strong. For the welfare of the horses we set a maximum rider weight of 85 kg (187 lbs).
No. Sumba Horse is an independent operator. NIHI restricts riding to resort guests; we welcome every visitor to the island.
