Three Days

3-Day Sumba Trip

We do not run a three-day trip. Four days is our shortest, and the reason is the drive between the two airports.

Why There Is No Three-Day Trip

Sumba is crossed, not circled. You land at Tambolaka in the southwest and leave from Waingapu in the east, and the road between them takes about four hours.

Three days would spend most of one of them in a car. Four days and three nights is the shortest route that still leaves time at the places you came for — and it is the one below.

Worth Knowing

If your dates are fixed at three days, tell us anyway. We would rather talk you through what is realistic than sell you a rushed version of something better.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "open trip" mean?

You join a small group of other travellers rather than booking the whole vehicle and guide privately. It keeps the cost at USD 459 instead of a private charter rate, and rooms are shared with a same-gender participant unless you pay the private room supplement.

Does this trip include horse riding?

No. The scheduled itinerary is sightseeing — traditional villages, waterfalls, savanna hills and beaches. Riding can be discussed separately around your dates; message us and we will tell you what fits.

What happens if fewer than four people book my date?

The departure is not confirmed until four participants have booked it. We will tell you where a date stands before you commit, which is why we suggest holding off on non-refundable flights until confirmation.

Which airport do I fly into and out of?

In to Tambolaka (TMC) in Southwest Sumba, out of Waingapu (WGP) in East Sumba. They are different airports about four hours apart by road — the trip crosses the island, so a return ticket to Tambolaka will not work.

Can I have my own room?

Yes, for USD 99 per room, subject to availability. Without it, rooms are twin sharing and you will be paired with a participant of the same gender.

How fit do I need to be?

Medium. There are short hikes to hilltops and waterfalls over uneven ground, and two early starts — 5:30 am on the final day. No specialist fitness or experience is needed.
