Two things make it exceptional for riding. The sand is unusually firm and compact at low tide, which gives a surface you can extend on without the soft-sand fatigue common elsewhere. And the cliffs funnel you onto the beach through a gap, so the ocean arrives all at once rather than gradually.
You do not need to be staying at the resort. The beach is public and our access routes do not cross resort property.

What Makes Nihiwatu Different
Firm compact sand at low tide is the technical reason this beach rides so well — you can extend a canter without the horse working through soft ground the whole way.
The limestone cliffs behind the beach do something else: they hide it until the last moment. Arriving through the gap is the part guests describe afterwards, more often than the ride itself.
Because access is via public routes rather than the resort, our departures do not depend on where you are staying — but they are limited daily, which is deliberate.

Nihiwatu is in West Sumba, reachable from Tambolaka Airport and from our Kodi base. Every ride includes door-to-door transfers, and the approach itself is part of the experience rather than dead time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to stay at Nihi Sumba resort to ride here?
No. Our Nihiwatu rides are open to all Sumba Horse guests regardless of where you are staying. The beach is public and our access routes do not pass through any resort property.
How do I get to Nihiwatu Beach?
All rides include transfers. It is roughly an hour from Tambolaka Airport and 45 minutes from our Kodi base — and the ride down to the beach is part of the experience.
Is swimming possible during the ride?
Yes, on the longer rides. The beach has calm sections suitable for swimming away from the surf break, and we provide waterproof bags for your belongings.
