Mountain Trail Horse Riding
Traverse ancient highland trails through lush tropical forests, past cascading waterfalls, and across dramatic volcanic ridgelines on our legendary mountain expeditions.
Explore Sumba’s Dramatic Highland Interior
Beyond the beaches, Sumba’s mountainous interior reveals a completely different world — one of dense tropical forests, plunging river valleys, and ancient trails that have connected highland villages for centuries. Our Mountain Trail rides take you into this rarely visited landscape on horseback, following paths that were once the only routes between Sumba’s isolated communities. These trails wind through some of the most pristine tropical forest remaining in Eastern Indonesia, offering encounters with exotic wildlife, stunning panoramic views, and an immersion into Sumba’s remote highland culture.
The terrain varies dramatically depending on the route chosen. Our Wanokaka Highland trail follows ancient paths through dense forest canopy where sunlight filters through towering mahogany and teak trees, creating a cathedral-like atmosphere. The Lamboya Ridge route takes you along dramatic ridgelines with 360-degree views of the island — on clear days, you can see the ocean on both the north and south coasts simultaneously. The Anakalang Valley trail descends through terraced rice paddies and traditional villages, passing megalithic tomb complexes that date back hundreds of years.
Why Mountain Trail Riding is Special in Sumba
What makes Sumba’s mountain trails extraordinary is the complete absence of motorized traffic. Unlike trail riding destinations where you share paths with ATVs and hikers, Sumba’s highland trails are used exclusively by horses, water buffalo, and villagers on foot. This means an authentically peaceful riding experience where the soundtrack is birdsong, rushing water, and the gentle creak of your saddle. Our Sandalwood Ponies are perfectly suited to mountain terrain — their compact build, tough hooves, and low center of gravity allow them to navigate steep, rocky paths with remarkable confidence.
Each mountain trail ride passes through at least two traditional villages where life continues much as it has for centuries. You’ll see women weaving intricate ikat textiles on traditional looms, children playing with hand-carved wooden horses, and elders tending to ceremonial houses adorned with buffalo horns — symbols of wealth and prestige. Our guides, all from local communities, facilitate respectful cultural exchanges that enrich the riding experience immeasurably. These are not staged tourist encounters but genuine glimpses into a living culture.
Trail Difficulty Levels and Duration
We offer mountain trails at three difficulty levels. Our Gentle Valley rides follow wide, well-maintained paths through lower elevations — suitable for confident beginners and ideal for families. These rides last 3-4 hours and include stops at waterfall swimming holes and village viewpoints. Our Intermediate Highland routes involve steeper terrain, narrow forest paths, and occasional river crossings. These 4-6 hour rides suit experienced riders comfortable at all gaits on varied terrain. Our Advanced Summit expeditions tackle Sumba’s most challenging trails, including steep ascents to ridge viewpoints over 800 meters elevation. These full-day adventures are for experienced riders seeking a genuine wilderness challenge.
Multi-day mountain trail expeditions are available for riders who want the ultimate Sumba experience. Our 3-day Highland Explorer includes camping in traditional villages, meals prepared by local families, and access to trails that single-day rides cannot reach. The 5-day Grand Traverse crosses the entire width of Sumba Island from south coast to north coast, following ancient trade routes through the mountainous interior — one of the most ambitious horseback journeys available anywhere in Southeast Asia.
What We Provide on Mountain Trails
All mountain trail rides include experienced bilingual guides, well-maintained tack, helmets, water and snacks, and first aid equipment. Longer rides include packed lunches featuring local cuisine. Multi-day expeditions provide full camping equipment, all meals, support staff, and pack horses for luggage. We carry satellite communication devices on all remote routes for safety. Our trail horses are rotated regularly and maintained in peak condition by our in-house veterinarian and traditional horse handler.
What fitness level is needed for mountain trails?
Gentle Valley rides require basic fitness. Highland routes need moderate fitness — you should be comfortable riding for 4-6 hours. Summit expeditions require good overall fitness and significant riding experience.
What wildlife might we see?
Sumba’s forests are home to numerous endemic species including the Sumba Hornbill, Sumba Eclectus Parrot, wild deer, monitor lizards, and numerous butterfly species. Our guides are excellent wildlife spotters.
Are mountain trails safe in rainy season?
We adjust our mountain routes seasonally. During wet season (November-March), some high-altitude trails close. We offer alternative routes through lower valleys that remain safe and spectacular year-round.

Trail Difficulty and Preparation
Our mountain trails vary in difficulty from gentle rolling hills suitable for beginners to challenging ridge routes that test experienced riders. Before each mountain ride, your guide conducts a terrain briefing covering ascent and descent techniques, how to shift your weight on steep gradients, and what to expect at each stage. The Sandalwood Ponies excel on mountain terrain — their compact build and low centre of gravity provide stability that larger breeds cannot match. All mountain rides include rest stops at scenic viewpoints where you can take photographs and hydrate while your horse grazes.
What is the elevation gain on mountain trails?
Our standard mountain trail involves approximately 300-400 metres of elevation gain over 2-3 hours. The advanced ridge trail reaches higher elevations with steeper gradients. Your guide selects the appropriate route based on your experience and the conditions on the day.
