Horse Swimming in Sumba

Experience the exhilarating thrill of riding horses through the warm turquoise waters of Sumba Island’s pristine coastline — an adventure unlike anything else in Southeast Asia.

The Ultimate Equestrian Water Adventure

Horse swimming is one of the most extraordinary experiences you can have on Sumba Island. Imagine riding your Sandalwood horse from a white sand beach directly into the crystal-clear Indian Ocean, feeling the powerful movement of your horse as it transitions from trotting on sand to swimming through warm tropical waters. This is not a staged tourist activity — it is a genuine extension of Sumbanese horse culture, where horses have swum in the ocean alongside their riders for generations.

Our horse swimming experiences take place at carefully selected beaches along Sumba’s southwestern coast, where the waters are calm, the seabed is sandy, and the conditions are safe for both riders and horses. Each session begins with a relaxed beach ride to warm up both you and your horse before gradually entering the water. Our experienced guides position themselves around you to ensure safety and to capture incredible photographs of this once-in-a-lifetime moment.

What to Expect During Your Swim

The experience begins at our beach staging area, where you meet your assigned horse and guide. After a thorough safety briefing covering water entry techniques, proper posture during swimming, and communication signals, you embark on a scenic 20-minute beach ride along the shoreline. This warm-up period allows you to establish a bond with your horse before the swimming portion begins.

As you guide your horse into the shallows, you will feel a remarkable shift in movement. Horses are natural swimmers, and the Sandalwood breed is particularly confident in water due to centuries of coastal living. The water rises from ankle depth to chest depth, and then your horse begins to swim. You will lean slightly forward, holding the mane gently while your horse powers through the water with strong, rhythmic strokes. The sensation is pure magic — weightless, powerful, and deeply connected to nature.

Each swimming session lasts approximately 15 to 20 minutes in the water, with the total experience spanning 2 to 3 hours including the beach ride, swimming, and a rest period with refreshments on the sand. Photographers capture every moment, and you receive a curated gallery of professional images within 48 hours.

Safety and Requirements

Horse swimming requires intermediate riding confidence. You should be comfortable controlling a horse at walk and trot on flat terrain. Complete beginners are welcome to join the beach ride portion and watch the swimming from shore, or take a beginner lesson first to build the skills needed. All riders must wear approved safety helmets and life vests during the water portion. Our guides carry emergency equipment and maintain constant visual contact with every rider.

We limit each swimming group to a maximum of 4 riders to ensure personalized attention and minimize stress on the horses. Our horses rotate on a careful schedule — each horse swims no more than twice per week, and veterinary checkups are conducted monthly to ensure peak health and happiness. Rider weight limit is 85 kilograms for the swimming portion to protect equine welfare.

Best Time for Horse Swimming

Horse swimming is available year-round, but the best conditions are from April through November during the dry season when ocean swells are minimal and visibility is at its peak. Morning sessions starting at 7 AM offer the calmest waters and the most beautiful golden light for photography. Sunset sessions are available from May to October and create absolutely stunning images with the orange sky reflecting off the water as you ride.

Do I need to know how to swim?

No. You remain on horseback throughout the experience and wear a life vest at all times. However, being comfortable in water is important for your enjoyment and confidence. If you are anxious around water, the beach ride portion is equally spectacular.

What should I wear for horse swimming?

Wear swimwear or quick-dry clothing underneath. Avoid loose fabrics that could tangle. We provide helmets and life vests. Reef-safe sunscreen is required and we provide it complimentary. Bring a change of clothes for after the experience.

How much does horse swimming cost?

The horse swimming experience starts from USD 185 per person for the standard 2.5-hour session including beach ride, swimming, refreshments, and professional photography. Private sessions for couples or solo riders are available from USD 295. Multi-day packages that combine swimming with trail rides offer significant savings.
