Horse Swimming in Sumba

Ride your Sandalwood Pony from white sand straight into the warm Indian Ocean — an experience unlike anything else in Southeast Asia.

The Ultimate Equestrian Water Adventure

Imagine riding from a white sand beach directly into clear ocean, feeling your horse shift from trotting on sand to swimming through warm water.

Horses are natural swimmers, and the Sandalwood breed is unusually confident in water after centuries of coastal living. The water rises from ankle to chest depth, and then your horse begins to swim.

You lean slightly forward, holding the mane while the horse powers through with strong rhythmic strokes. The sensation is weightless and powerful at once.

What to Expect During Your Swim

The session starts at our beach staging area with a safety briefing — water entry, posture while swimming, and the signals you will use with your guide.

A twenty-minute beach ride along the shoreline follows, which is really about building trust with your horse before the water. Each swim lasts fifteen to twenty minutes, with the whole session running two to three hours including the ride and a rest with refreshments.

  • Helmet and life vest, worn throughout the water
  • Maximum four riders per session
  • Guides carry emergency equipment
  • Reef-safe sunscreen provided
  • Professional photography included
  • Bring a change of clothes for afterwards

Requirements, Welfare and Timing

Horse swimming asks for intermediate confidence — you should be comfortable controlling a horse at walk and trot on flat ground. Complete beginners are welcome to join the beach ride and watch from shore, or take a lesson first.

Horse welfare sets the limits here, not demand. Each horse swims no more than twice a week, veterinary checks run monthly, and the rider weight limit for the swimming portion is 85 kg.

Sessions run year round, but April to November brings minimal swell and the best visibility. Morning starts at 7 AM give the calmest water and the best light; sunset sessions run from May onward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know how to swim?

No. You stay on horseback throughout and wear a life vest at all times. Being comfortable around water matters for your own enjoyment — if you are anxious, the beach ride portion is just as spectacular.

What should I wear?

Swimwear or quick-dry clothing underneath, and nothing loose that could tangle. We provide helmets, life vests and reef-safe sunscreen. Bring a change of clothes.

How much does horse swimming cost?

Starts from USD 200 per person for the standard 2.5-hour session including beach ride, swimming, refreshments and photography. Private sessions from USD 295. Multi-day packages offer significant savings.

Can complete beginners take part?

Not in the water — it needs walk and trot confidence. Beginners can ride the beach portion and watch the swim from shore, or book a beginner lesson first and swim later in their stay.
