Sumba Barat Daya split from West Sumba in 2007 and has stayed almost entirely off the tourist map since. That is the whole appeal.
For riders it offers the most varied ground on the island — coastal cliff, hidden cove, dense tropical forest, waterfall approach and open savanna plateau, often inside a single day. The Sandalwood ponies bred in this region are noticeably surefooted on it, having had a few centuries to adapt.

Riding in Southwest Sumba
The combination of park trails, waterfall approaches, cliff paths and village connections gives this regency more variety per hour in the saddle than anywhere else on Sumba.
Routes are adjusted seasonally — some river crossings that are trivial in August are not attempted in January.

Season, Access and Fitness
April to November gives firm, dry trails and is the straightforward choice. But the wet season has a real argument here that it does not have elsewhere: the waterfalls run at full volume, the forest turns vivid, and there is essentially nobody else around.
Access is through Tambolaka Airport, with Kodi Bangedo about forty-five minutes by road and Waikabubak one to two hours. We can have you in the saddle within an hour of landing if you want it that way.
Waterfall routes ask for moderate fitness — there are river crossings and real elevation change. Family-friendly variants avoid the harder ground without giving up the scenery, and horses are matched to the terrain as well as to the rider.

Moderate fitness is recommended. They involve river crossings and varied elevation. Guides match horses to both your experience and the terrain, and easier variants exist for families.
Can I visit the national park independently?
Manupeu Tanah Daru requires a permit. We arrange permits, guides and logistics as part of any Southwest Sumba riding package.
Is Southwest Sumba suitable for families?
Yes. We run family routes that avoid the technical ground while keeping the waterfalls, coves and villages. Children ride with an individual handler on a lead rope.
Is the wet season worth it here?
More than in other regencies. Lapopu is at its most powerful November to March and the forest is at its best. Trails are muddier and some crossings are skipped, so routes shift rather than stop.
