Lapopu Waterfall — East Nusa Tenggara’s Tallest Cascade

Standing at over 100 meters, Lapopu is the tallest waterfall in East Nusa Tenggara province and one of the most impressive in all of Indonesia. Located in the Manupeu Tanah Daru National Park in Central Sumba, Lapopu cascades in multiple tiers down a sheer rock face into a pool surrounded by dense tropical vegetation. The approach on horseback follows forest trails that would challenge any vehicle but are perfectly suited to Sumba’s sure-footed Sandalwood horses.

The ride to Lapopu passes through some of Sumba’s most pristine forest — home to endemic bird species including the Sumba Hornbill, Sumba Buttonquail, and Red-naped Fruit Dove. Because it requires a significant horseback journey through forest trails to reach, Matayangu receives very few visitors, preserving its pristine character. The pool at its base is deep enough for swimming, and the mist from the falls creates natural air conditioning on hot days — a welcome relief after hours in the saddle.

Waterfall rides are best during and immediately after wet season (November-April), when water flow is at its most impressive. What to Expect on a Waterfall Trail Ride

Waterfall trail rides are moderate to challenging, involving forest trails, river crossings, and elevation changes. Riders should be comfortable at walk and trot; cantering is generally limited to open sections between forests. The pace is designed for enjoyment and safety rather than speed.
