Flights to Sumba from Bali (DPS) take roughly 1 to 1.5 hours and land at one of two airports: Tambolaka (TMC) in the west or Waingapu (WGP) in the east. Bali and Jakarta: the two realistic gateways

Almost every international guest reaches Sumba through Bali (Denpasar, DPS) or Jakarta (Soekarno-Hatta, CGK). Bali is the simpler gateway by a wide margin; flights to Sumba from Jakarta almost always connect.

• Bali to Tambolaka flight (DPS–TMC): about 1–1.5 hours, direct.
• Bali to Waingapu flight (DPS–WGP): a similar range, direct.
• Jakarta to Tambolaka flight (CGK–TMC): normally with a stop via Bali or Kupang; budget 3–4 hours or more including transit and connection risk.

These routes are typically flown by Indonesian carriers such as Wings Air, Lion Air and Citilink, but frequencies change season to season, so we do not publish a Sumba domestic flights schedule here — any timetable printed on a web page is wrong within weeks. Airlines, days of operation and departure times are subject to change and confirmed at booking. Which Sumba airport should I fly to: TMC or WGP

Both are small regional fields with a handful of movements a day. The difference is geography.

• Tambolaka (TMC) serves West and Southwest Sumba: Ratenggaro and Praijing villages, Weekuri Lagoon, Mandorak Beach, the Kodi coast, Lapopu and Matayangu waterfalls, the Pasola districts and the southwest resort belt including NIHI Sumba.
• Waingapu (WGP) serves East Sumba: Bukit Wairinding and Bukit Tanarara savannah, Puru Kambera, Tanggedu and Waimarang waterfalls, Prailiu weaving village and Walakiri Beach at sunset. The two hubs are joined by one main inland road. Plan 5 to 6 hours of pure driving between Tambolaka and Waingapu, which becomes a 7 to 8 hour day with lunch and a few scenic stops. That single number should drive your airport choice.

Our routing rule: in Tambolaka, out Waingapu

For any cross-island itinerary we book guests into TMC and out of WGP (or the reverse). You cross the island once, in one direction, and never repeat that 5–6 hour drive.

Fly in and out of the same airport only when you stay on one side: a West-only trip works on TMC–TMC, an East-only trip on WGP–WGP. What fails is a one-side itinerary booked on a cross-island ticket, or a cross-island itinerary booked as a return — we see both every season, and both cost the guest a day.

Morning flights save half a day

Our official meeting point is Tambolaka Airport (TMC), starting at 12.00 WITA. Land at 11.00 and your first day is a real day of travel. Land at 15.00 and it is a transfer plus a hotel check-in — a day you paid for and will not use.

• Morning arrival into TMC — ideal, straight into the itinerary.
• Midday or afternoon arrival — fly in H-1, the day before, and sleep near the airport in Southwest Sumba. We recommend this, not as an upsell: it turns a half-wasted day into a full one and removes the delay risk.

The same applies going home. A cross-island trip ends with drop-off at Waingapu Airport around 11.00 WITA, so your return flight should depart from roughly 11.30 WITA onwards.

What happens after you land

The airports are simple: off the aircraft, across the apron, at the kerb in ten minutes. Then the island takes over. Roads are mostly paved but narrow and patchy — average speed is 40–60 km/h on main roads, 20–30 km/h on the rough tracks to waterfalls.

• TMC to NIHI Sumba: about 65 km, a 1.5 to 2 hour drive — not the 45 minutes the distance suggests.
• TMC to Ratenggaro (Kodi): 2 to 2.5 hours one way.
• WGP to Bukit Wairinding: 1.5 to 2 hours; WGP to Walakiri Beach, 30 to 45 minutes.

That is why we put a driver-guide and a private vehicle under every arrival. Taxis are not reliably waiting and ride-hailing is not a plan on Sumba. Surfboards, baggage and small-aircraft realities

Aircraft on these routes are regional turboprops or small narrow-bodies, and hold space is limited. If you are bringing a board:

• Declare surfboards in advance. Oversized-baggage acceptance depends on the airline, the aircraft on the day and available hold space — paying an excess fee at check-in does not guarantee it.
• Board-bag limits and fees vary by carrier and are subject to change and confirmed at booking; we check them against your specific flight rather than quote a number that may be stale.
• Otherwise travel light: a soft duffel survives these drives better than a rigid case.

Season matters too. December to March is when the savannah turns green and the island photographs at its best, but rain slows the rough roads. June to September is dry, brown and dusty, with the most reliable driving. Both are good trips — just different ones.

Labuan Bajo, ferries and the buffer night home

Two questions come up constantly. First, a Labuan Bajo to Sumba flight: there is no dependable direct service, and the practical routing is back through Bali. Combining Komodo and Sumba works well — you simply budget that connection honestly. Second, the Bali to Sumba ferry: sea routes exist in eastern Indonesia, but they are long, indirect and weather-dependent. For fixed dates, fly.
